Supervision of Children on
Outings and Visits
Policy statement
Children benefit from being taken Out of the Club to go on visits or trips to local parks or other suitable venues for activities. Staff in our clubs ensure that there are procedures to keep children safe on outings; all staff and volunteers are aware of and follow the procedures below:
Procedures
Parents sign a general consent on registration for their children to be taken out as a part of the daily activities of the setting.
There is a risk assessment for each venue carried out, which is reviewed regularly.
A risk assessment is carried out before an outing takes place.
Our adult to child ratio is normally one adult to ten children, depending on their age, sensibility and type of venue as well as how it is to be reached. An extra staff member will be added for trips to venues that are done by public transport or on a coach.
Staff takes a mobile phone on outings, and supplies of tissues, wipes, as well as a mini first aid pack. The amount of equipment will vary and be consistent with the venue and the number of children as well as how long they will be out for.
We take a mobile phone on outings, we also take a copy of children’s registration form with them with contact details of parents/carers, medicines required for individual children and a mini first aid kit.
We provide children with bright hats to wear that contain the name and setting telephone number – but not the name of the child.
If public transport is to be used extra attention is required of all staff members.
On trains, underground or buses, staff members must ensure:
The station to be used has been notified prior to the group’s arrival.
Children remain in twos in line at all times while waiting.
Children use single file on the escalator.
When boarding/alighting, the lead worker will ensure they are first.
Two workers must ensure the doors remain open while the children board/alight.
Children remain seated throughout the journey and no eating or drinking is allowed.
On coach journeys staff members must ensure:
No children sit in the front seats at any time.
The seat adjoining the emergency exit is only be used by workers
Children remain seated throughout the journey and wear the seat belt
All belongings are stored safely in the over-head compartments.
There is no eating or drinking.
Children who suffer from travel sickness are seated near the front of the coach.
